Snow here-- for real!

The big tree in front, that drips goop on our car in summer.  Across the street is the empty Rite-Aid store.

It was snowing last night.

This is probably the only snow we'll get this year.  The storm systems come in, and most often we get rain or just a dusting, where other areas get more snow.  Many times the big systems come in from the north and Everett will get dumped on, say, and it will go east to the foothills and leave snow and curve south and back west, giving snow to Olympia, Graham, the Peninsula (Gig Harbor and beyond, up to Bremerton), but Tacoma is in that center point and Commencement Bay keeps us just warm enough that we don't get the snow. People can have some snow as close as five miles from where we live, but we just get wet. (We used to have snow more often, but in recent years it seems less common.)

Taken with the flash, standing on our itty-bitty porch looking north across the street on the side.
There's a hedge on each side of the walkway up to the front door.  That's the trunk of the same tree in front, below.  Then the next picture is from the edge of this same hedge to the front yard and out onto the street.  It's so still and lovely, as long as you don't have to go out.

It was striking, the light coming in through the closed blinds that would look out on the side yard.  There's that street light on the corner, and the white snow just reflected it.  I know how dark the dining room is normally as I turn off the kitchen light and make my way through it, turning to the bedroom door.

We have some hills in our ward boundaries.  For us, church was pretty close to a straight shot, and our uphill street to the side was sanded because it's an ambulance route.  Our front street (remember we're on a corner) gets some traffic.  There were 90 people at church, but they didn't have much Primary staffing so they sent us home after sacrament meeting.  Wonderful talks, too bad so many missed them.

This was the view out the back door when we got home--the snow was still there.
Looking from the back door to the corner of the fence, this is the rail that keeps you from falling off the back step.
Across the side, at the church across the street, one of their members came early to shovel the sidewalks, and his kids stayed out of his way by making a small snow man.  Lots of kids had fun today.  The roads are melted now, and it should all be gone by morning, because it's been gently drizzling all evening.

[Updated to add, it stopped drizzling at some point, and we still have snow on the grass areas, with grass poking through, and a full blanket in sheltered areas.  The roads are bare and wet, so there's enough to be wintery looking but not to affect driving.]
