Observations on being 'parents' again
These are the things we've found with having a baby in the house:
Anything with cords is an irresistable temptation.
Anything that makes noise is fun--if it makes noise and brings Grandpa running, even better.
You can put a dropcloth under the high chair, but he will still manage to throw food into the rug.
It doesn't matter which arm you go for first with the wet rag, he will rub the other into his hair faster than you can get to it. (Especially if it's tomato sauce.)
A graham cracker will distract from almost everything.
Having Grandpa say, "Go play with your blocks (preschool legos)" will get you pretty much nowhere, but if Grammy goes and rattles the bucket he will leave whatever he is doing and go.
Peek-a-boo and patta-cake still entertain.
That spot where you put things up last week so he couldn't get at them? He can reach it now.
If it was semi-organized before, it's chaos now.
If it's on paper and it's important, he's grabbed it.
It is a very good thing to have a pediatrician lined up ahead of time, and the new ER at our local children's hospital is wonderful. Everyone there is wonderful.
If you pull the pot lids out of the oven storage drawer and hit them just right, they will ring with a musical tone.
Last time we had such a high-energy toddler (his daddy) we had older children to help, and we were younger.
The playpen in the living room became the place to put things into to keep him out of them.
There is no feeling quite like holding a laughing baby on your lap. Or a sleeping baby.
His face of joyful amazement when you hand him a musical Christmas card and he opens it is priceless. And when he closes it and then opens it again. And again! Look!
Laundry increases not just because of the baby clothes you have to wash, but because of the fingerprints and, umm, 'noseprints' you find on your clothes that you were going to wear another day.
Peach yogurt and small dark grapes are the greatest foods on earth. (And the grapes roll!)
If it has wheels, it's cool. Ditto if it bounces. But onions don't, why not?
His daddy will be here in a few days. Our task will be done and the house very quiet.
